The Science

Tap water contains chlorine or chloramine, which are added to make it safe for human consumption but are harmful to fish and the beneficial bacteria in your biofilter. Betta Basics™ neutralises these chemicals instantly, making new water safe to use right away.

Beyond dechlorination, Betta Basics™ buffers your water to a pH of 7.0, which sits comfortably within the natural range for bettas. Maintaining a stable pH is just as important as hitting the right number, fluctuations caused by water changes or evaporation top-ups can stress bettas and weaken their immune response over time. By conditioning water with Betta Basics™ at every water change and a few times throughout the week, you maintain consistency and reduce the risk of unnecessary stress on your fish.

Advice

Add 1 capful (5 mL) per 1.25 L of water with every water change. For best results, also dose 2 to 3 times per week to maintain stable water chemistry between changes. If your betta bowl or tank contains no live plants, you can use the lower dose of 1 capful per 4 L. Always treat new water before adding it to your betta’s home, rather than adding the conditioner and water separately.

Heads-up

Betta Basics™ is formulated for small betta setups and is not intended as a replacement for regular water changes. Even with conditioning, bettas in smaller tanks still require frequent partial water changes to keep ammonia and waste at safe levels. If you notice persistent ammonia problems, consider pairing Betta Basics™ with Seachem Prime® or Seachem AmGuard™ for additional detoxification support.
