Prime® is Seachem’s flagship water conditioner and the gold standard in dechlorination for both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Highly concentrated and incredibly effective, Prime® removes chlorine and chloramine while simultaneously detoxifying ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. It is non-acidic, will not affect pH, and won’t over-activate protein skimmers, making it a reliable choice for reef hobbyists too. Up to 5 times more concentrated than competing products, a little goes a very long way.

The Science

Most water conditioners simply remove chlorine and stop there. Prime® goes further by binding ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate into a non-toxic form that your biofilter can still process and remove naturally. This makes it particularly valuable during tank cycling, when ammonia and nitrite spikes are common and can quickly become dangerous for fish.

Prime® also neutralises heavy metals found in tap water at typical concentration levels, providing an added layer of protection with every dose. Each cap thread measures approximately 1 mL, making it easy to measure accurate smaller doses for compact tanks or top-ups. The sulphur odour you may notice when opening the bottle is completely normal and is no cause for concern.

Advice

Use 1 capful (5 mL) per 200 L of new water at every water change or when setting up a new tank. Prime® can be added directly to the aquarium, but works best when added to new water before it enters the tank. For exceptionally high chloramine levels, a double dose is safe. In a nitrite emergency, up to 5 times the normal dose can be used. If water temperature exceeds 30°C and chlorine or ammonia levels are low, reduce to a half dose.  When introducing new fish to an established tank, use it alongside Seachem Stability®.

Heads-up

The sulphur smell when opening Prime® is normal and does not indicate a problem with the product. While Prime® detoxifies ammonia and nitrite, it is not a substitute for a functioning biofilter or regular water changes. For ongoing biological filtration support, use Seachem Stability® alongside Prime® as part of your regular maintenance routine.
