A simple pond or water feature can change your garden into a successful local ecosystem. We believe that biodiversity ponds are crucial to doing our bit in preserving Australian biodiversity. Together, we can make a difference.
In todays bustling urban environment it seems we are constantly faced with articles about the decline of biodiversity, and the catastrophic impacts this will have on our planet. But a lot of the time it can feel like we are only ever being told about the problem, and never offered any easy solutions that we can carry out in our own homes. So…
What can we do about it?
Biodiversity ponds for native wildlife
Water is the life force of nature.
Even the most simple garden pond or water feature can support a hugely complex natural ecosystem, drastically increasing the presence of local fauna as it provides food, water and shelter to our native animals.
Adding one of these ponds to your garden creates a huge boost for local biodiversity in urban areas where it would otherwise struggle to thrive.
Among some of the hundreds of animals biodiversity ponds will help to support are dragonflies, frogs, fish, birds, lizards, native marsupials and more. Many of these animals are becoming increasingly endangered in our country due to the spread of urbanisation (like the purple spotted gudgeon, which we proudly stock). Making a resource like this invaluable to their survival.
Our experience
To put the idea of a biodiversity pond to the test we decided to construct one ourselves at our local Sydney based shop.
In April of 2024 we turned a patch of barren lawn into what has now established itself as a thriving local ecosystem. Over the past year we have seen an explosion in biodiversity in the area, with non stop sightings of a huge array of insects and animals. We even set up a camera trap to monitor visitors around the clock.
So far we have evidence of possums, lizards, bandicoots, antechinus, reptiles, native bees, dragonflies, multiple frog species and hundreds of birds
We stocked the pond with native, frog friendly fish (pacific blue eyes and pygmy perch) as well as Australian glass shrimp which have been successfully breeding. The pond is filled with native plants and run by a simple solar pump.
The results are nothing short of inspiring.
Creating your own pond for native wildlife
The best part about a biodiversity pond is that there is no one way it should look. There is a biodiversity pond suited to every home, garden and lifestyle. From a large aquascaped pool to a simple planted water pot – any water feature, if designed correctly, has the potential to become a key resource for animals in your local ecosystem.
At The Fish Works we strongly believe in doing our part to preserve Australian biodiversity. And for us, that means helping you bring this amazing natural resource into your home because together, we can make a difference.
