Seachem CupriSorb

Seachem CupriSorb is a powerful copper-specific chelating resin designed to rapidly and efficiently remove copper and heavy metals from both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Whether you are dealing with a copper emergency, transitioning a treated tank back to invertebrate keeping, or managing long-term substrate leaching, CupriSorb offers a level of copper removal that carbon and standard cation exchange resins simply cannot match.

Unlike competing products that rely on cation exchange — a method that is ineffective in saltwater — CupriSorb uses true chelation chemistry to bind and extract all forms of copper, including chelated copper that other products leave behind. It remains active until fully exhausted and can be regenerated repeatedly, making it a cost-effective long-term solution for copper management.

Key Benefits

  • Removes copper faster and more effectively than activated carbon
  • Extracts all forms of copper including chelated copper
  • Effective in both freshwater and saltwater — unlike cation exchange resins
  • Gradually removes precipitated copper leaching from gravel and substrate
  • Allows invertebrates to be safely reintroduced to previously copper-treated tanks
  • Visual exhaustion indicator — beads turn deep blue-black when spent
  • Regenerable for repeated reuse

Dosing Instructions

Use 250 mL per 600 L of aquarium water to remove up to 7,500 mg (12 ppm) of copper.

Place CupriSorb in a filter media bag such as Seachem The Bag™ and position it in a high flow area of your filtration system — a canister filter, chemical filtration module, box filter, or trickle filter — to maximise water contact with the resin. To address undetectable substrate leaching, continue use for at least 2 weeks after copper tests read zero. Monitor copper levels throughout using Seachem MultiTest™ Copper.

Regeneration Instructions

When the beads have turned deep blue-black, CupriSorb can be regenerated rather than discarded. Working outdoors and away from children, soak the resin in a non-metal container with 2 cups of water and ½ cup of muriatic acid (available from pool supply stores — follow all safety warnings on the label). Soak for 1 hour, then rinse thoroughly. Repeat as needed until the original colour is restored. Once rinsed, add sodium bicarbonate until foaming stops, then rinse again. CupriSorb is now ready for reuse.

Helpful Advice

CupriSorb is particularly valuable when transitioning a tank back to invertebrate keeping after copper treatment, as copper can continue leaching from substrate and decoration long after treatment has ended. Keeping CupriSorb running for at least two weeks after tests show zero copper ensures residual leaching is fully addressed before sensitive invertebrates are reintroduced.

Heads-up

Muriatic acid is a hazardous chemical. Regeneration must be carried out outdoors, away from children and pets, and with appropriate protective equipment. Always follow the safety warnings printed on the acid container. If you are not comfortable handling muriatic acid, CupriSorb can simply be discarded when exhausted rather than regenerated.
