How to Vacuum a Pond

Follow these simple steps to get the best results from your pond vacuum cleaner:

1. Remove large debris first. Use a net to physically remove large particles such as leaves and twigs before you begin vacuuming. These twigs and (the bane of our existence) NUTS can clog the vacuum. It will not break it, but it does mean you have to stop what you're doing to fish out the blockage before you can continue.
2. Let the water settle. Allow the disturbed, mucky water to settle before starting. Some of this will be drawn into your filter, which is perfectly fine.
3. Vacuum the sludge. Place the suction head directly onto the bottom of the pond where sludge has accumulated. Move the vacuum slowly over the worst areas, taking care not to stir up the dirt again.
4. Discharge to the garden. The vacuum will pump dirty water out to your garden or drain as you work. This is a great opportunity to do a partial water change at the same time!

Types of Pond Vacuums for Sale

All pond vacuum cleaners require gravity to discharge dirty water. They come in two main configurations: single-chambered and double-chambered.

Single-Chambered e.g. Pondovac Classic, PondMax PV30HD	The chamber fills up with waste water until full, at which point the engine switches off for approximately 20 seconds to allow the waste to gravity-discharge via a large pipe at the base of the unit. After 20 seconds, the engine turns back on and you continue vacuuming. We recommend directing this discharge water onto the garden, it's packed with nutrients your plants will love!
Double-Chambered e.g. OASE Pondovac 4	Uses two alternating chambers so that while one is discharging, the other is still collecting, meaning the vacuum runs continuously with no interruptions. Significantly more powerful, less prone to clogging from sticks and leaves, and ideal for larger ponds or regular use.

Which Pond Vacuum is Right for Me?

Our Go-To Recommendation OASE Pondovac 4	If you have a large pond, are time-poor, or clean ponds regularly; this is the one. It runs continuously, has significantly more power, and is much less easily clogged by sticks and leaves. This is the vacuum we use on our own maintenance jobs.
Mid range option OASE Pondovac Classic	If the Pondovac 4 is a bit out of your price range, we recommend the Pondovac Classic. Not as powerful and only single-chambered, but still very effective. It's German-engineered with the good OASE warranty period.
Budget Option PondMax PV30HD	A solid single-chambered option for smaller ponds or occasional maintenance. The OASE vs PondMax toss-up comes down mostly to preference between German vs Chinese manufacturing. The PV30HD does a great job for the price and still has a solid warranty on it!
