When feeding goldfish, there are two things to consider:
While the specific choice often depends on the owner and their fish, there are a few key rules of thumb to follow.
The most important rule when feeding goldfish has nothing to do with the food itself, but how much of it you feed.
When a customer walks into the shop with cloudy water, algae, a clogged filter, or fish that look a bit sluggish, the first thing we’ll ask is “How much do you feed your fish?”
— THE TWO MINUTE RULE —
Feed your goldfish as much as they will consume within 2 minutes. Any food left after two minutes should be removed, and less should be fed next time.
Goldfish are opportunistic scavengers, if you keep adding food, they will keep trying to eat it. However, their bodies can only process so much at once. Any pellets still floating around or sitting on the gravel after two minutes are officially waste.
Leaving uneaten food in the water is like leaving a sandwich to rot under your sofa. It breaks down and releases ammonia into the water, which can quickly cause poor water quality and unhealthy fish.
They may beg for food, but a slightly hungry goldfish is usually a healthier and more active goldfish.
While many people think all fish food is created equal, what you put in the tank directly affects both the health of your goldfish and the clarity of your water.
At The Fish Works, we carry a range of options, but we always emphasise quality.
| Goldfish Pellets | Our top recommendation for most keepers. Pellets are nutrient-dense and hold their shape longer in the water, meaning they don’t dissolve and pollute the tank before the fish can eat them. They are also much easier to remove if you accidentally overfeed. |
| Goldfish Flakes | A classic option that works well for smaller fish or surface feeders. However, flakes break apart quickly and can release nutrients into the water if uneaten. If you prefer flakes, the key is feeding very small amounts that disappear instantly. |
| Best Staple Option PELLETS |
Cleaner Feeding: Pellets hold their shape longer and create less waste in the tank. Easier to Control Portions: Pellets make it simple to measure how much your fish are actually eating. |
| Best for Small Fish FLAKES |
Great for smaller goldfish or fish that prefer feeding directly at the surface, but should be fed sparingly to avoid water quality issues. |
| Best for Fancy Goldfish SINKING PELLETS |
Encourages natural bottom grazing behaviour and can help reduce the risk of buoyancy or swim bladder issues in round-bodied fancy goldfish. |
