Seachem Pond Matrix

Pond Matrix™ is a biological filter media that helps with biological filtration and removal of harmful waste from your pond (such as ammonia and nitrate).

Biological filtration is crucial for a healthy pond ecosystem. Most biological filtration media, such as sponges or bioballs, work by providing as much external surface area as possible for beneficial bacteria to grow.

Unlike other media, Pond Matrix™ also has a porous internal surface area which provides environment for both nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. Using this technloogy Pond Matrix can remove nitrate as well as ammonia and nitrite simultaneously in the same filter.

This advanced biomedia is inert; it will not affect your water’s pH levels. It does not break down and will not need to be replaced. It can be rinsed as needed without killing off bacterial colonies (we still usually recommend rinsing biomedia in a bucket of existing pond water).

You can also use it as a clean growing medium for pond plants!

Directions

Application Dosage
Filtration 2 Liters of Pond Matrix™ per 200 US gallons (~760 L)
Plant Support / Pond Bottom Use directly in pond or in pots; presoaking for several days recommended for sinking

Pond Matrix™ is inorganic and will not decompose or pollute pond water. Filter bags are generally not necessary due to its size.

The Science

Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are naturally occurring pollutants that can harm or even kill fish if allowed to build up. They are produced through the natural breakdown of fish waste, uneaten food, decaying plants, and other organic matter in the pond.

Ammonia and nitrite are removed by nitrifying bacteria that live on most biological media, such as bioballs, ceramic rings, or sponges. These bacteria convert ammonia into nitrite. In nature nitrite should then be converted into nitrate. Nitrate is less harmful than ammonia and nitrite but can still become dangerous in high concentrations.

Removing nitrate requires denitrifying bacteria, which need an anaerobic (oxygen-deprived) environment to grow. Most standard biomedia only support nitrifying bacteria and cannot remove nitrate effectively. The internal pores of Seachem Pond Matrix are specifically designed to create these low-oxygen spaces, making it one of the very few biological media capable of removing ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate simultaneously.
