Choosing and setting up the right filtration for a pond is one of the most common headaches for pond owners, between mismatched pump sizing, missing accessories and conflicting advice online.

This kit takes the guesswork out of it, pairing everything we recommend as a complete filtration set-up in one box. Other similar kits sold online are often built around a smaller, weaker pump; ours uses a stronger pump so the filter runs at its optimal flow rate and keeps your water in the best condition possible. The Filtoclear 5000 is a powerful, easy-to-maintain UV pressure filter that we recommend often, despite its higher price point, because it’s proven extremely reliable, effective and simple over many years of use. One of its best features is how easy it is to clean, thanks to a backwash system that lets you clean the filter without touching a drop of water. It also has an inbuilt 18 watt UV light to prevent the growth of single-celled algae, and we throw in an extra spare globe for free.

Pump: OASE Aquamax 5500 or 8500

The Filtoclear 5000 needs a solids-handling pond pump with a maximum flow rate of around 5000 litres per hour. For a filter positioned close to the pond with no lift after it, such as to a waterfall, the OASE Aquamax 5500 is ideal, pushing 5500 litres per hour with a maximum head height of 2.8 metres.

If your filter sits more than a few metres from the pond, or you need to pump up to a waterfall after the filter, step up to the Aquamax 8500, which does 8500 litres per hour with a maximum head height of 3.2 metres, to keep the recommended flow rate through the filter. Select your preferred pump from the drop-down menu. If you need to pump water further or higher than this, get in touch and we can customise the kit for you.

Extras

• Hosing: 5m of kink-free 38mm hose, cut to size to connect your pump to the filter intake and the filter outlet back to the pond. Position the intake and outlet hoses at opposite ends of the pond for proper circulation.
• Quick start bacteria: A sachet of beneficial bacteria to seed your filter during start-up, helping the pond cycle and stabilise so you can introduce livestock sooner.
• Free UV globe: A spare 18W UV globe, valued at $65, to fit inside your filter once the installed globe reaches the end of its effective life at around 12 months.

How to Set Up

This kit is straightforward for DIY installation. Position the filter somewhere as close to the pond as possible; it can be partially buried up to the head to conceal it, but leave enough clearance to stand above it and lift the backwash handle during cleaning.

Cut your hose in half. Connect one length from the Aquamax pump to the filter intake (marked with an arrow on the lid), and the other from the filter outlet back into the pond. Place the pump in the water, plug everything in, and switch it on.
