Understanding Your Light

When choosing or setting up aquarium lighting, three measurements are worth understanding: PAR, Kelvin, and LUX. Each tells you something different about how a light will perform in your tank.

PAR, or Photosynthetically Active Radiation, measures the spectral range of light between 400 and 700 nanometres, the range used by aquatic plants, corals, and symbiotic algae for photosynthesis. It is the most relevant measurement for planted tanks, as it indicates how much usable light energy your plants are actually receiving.

Kelvin rating describes the colour temperature of the light. Higher colour temperatures above 5500K produce cooler, blue-green tones that mimic open water or overcast daylight. Lower temperatures around 3000K produce warmer, yellow-red tones. The StripGlo Sunlight is tuned toward natural daylight tones, making it well-suited to tanks where colour clarity and a bright, clean appearance are the priority.

LUX is a measure of light intensity as perceived by the human eye, where 1 LUX equals 1 lumen per square metre. While PAR is the more meaningful figure for plant growth, LUX gives a useful indication of overall brightness and how the light will appear visually over your aquarium.

Advice

Select the StripGlo Sunlight size that best matches your tank length and use the adjustable mounting brackets to achieve a secure, centred fit. The natural daylight spectrum is particularly well-suited to planted freshwater aquariums and tanks where showcasing fish colouration is a priority. For planted aquariums, aim for a consistent photoperiod of 8 to 10 hours per day to encourage healthy plant growth without promoting nuisance algae.
