Neutral Regulator® is a complete water conditioner that adjusts and maintains pH at a stable 7.0, whether your water is running too high or too low. In addition to buffering pH, it softens water by precipitating calcium and magnesium, removes chlorine and chloramine, and detoxifies ammonia, making additional conditioning products unnecessary in most freshwater setups. For aquariums that require a pH outside of neutral, Neutral Regulator® can be paired with Acid Regulator™ to lower pH below 7.0, or with Alkaline Regulator™ to raise it above 7.0.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Adjusts and maintains pH at a stable 7.0 from either high or low starting points

  • Removes chlorine and chloramine
  • Detoxifies ammonia
  • Replaces the need for separate conditioning products in most freshwater aquariums
  • Compatible with Acid Regulator™ and Alkaline Regulator™ for precise pH targeting

The Science

Maintaining a stable pH of 7.0 is one of the most important aspects of freshwater aquarium keeping, particularly for fish species that are sensitive to fluctuations in water chemistry. Neutral Regulator® achieves this through a phosphate-based buffering system that actively resists pH change, pulling acidic water up toward neutral and alkaline water back down to the same point. This bidirectional buffering makes it reliable across a wide range of starting water conditions, whether you are working with naturally soft, acidic tap water or hard, alkaline water.

Beyond pH control, Neutral Regulator® addresses water hardness by precipitating excess calcium and magnesium, the minerals responsible for hard water. It also neutralises chlorine and chloramine on contact and detoxifies ammonia, consolidating the functions of multiple conditioning products into a single treatment. For aquariums where a pH other than 7.0 is required, it works in combination with Seachem’s other regulators to reach a specific target, and for further freshwater enhancement, it pairs well with Fresh Trace™.

Advice

Use 5 g (1 level teaspoon) per 40 to 80 L once or twice a month to maintain a stable pH of 7.0. For best results, dissolve Neutral Regulator® in replacement water before adding it to the aquarium rather than dosing directly. In aquariums with high alkalinity, daily dosing may be required initially until pH 7.0 is established, after which the standard maintenance schedule can be followed. To lower pH below 7.0, use in conjunction with Acid Regulator™. To raise pH above 7.0, use with Alkaline Regulator™.

Heads-up

Neutral Regulator® contains phosphate buffers, which may contribute to algae growth in aquariums with high nutrient levels or insufficient plant cover. Monitor phosphate levels if algae becomes a concern, and consider increasing water changes or plant density to manage excess nutrients. This product is formulated for freshwater use only and is not suitable for marine or reef aquariums.
