Pond water naturally drifts towards acidity over time, and once pH drops too low it can stress fish and destabilise the whole ecosystem.
pH Up Powder gently raises pond pH back towards a healthy, stable level. Koi and goldfish tolerate a fairly wide range, generally happy anywhere up to about 8.5, but readings below 7 indicate acidity and are worth correcting. Because it’s easy to overshoot and push pH up too high too quickly, this product should always be added slowly and in small doses, testing between each application with a pH test kit. Stable pH is only one part of overall water quality, and our Natural Medicated Pond & Aquarium Salt is a good complementary addition for supporting general fish health and immunity.
pH measures acidity and alkalinity, with a neutral reading of around 7. Lower readings indicate acidity, higher readings indicate alkalinity, and koi and goldfish generally favour the alkaline side, tolerating readings up to about 8.5. Several factors can gradually lower pond pH: decaying organic matter such as leaves, fish waste and uneaten food releases acids as it breaks down; rainwater is naturally more acidic than tap water and can acidify pond water directly; acidic soil surrounding or beneath the pond can leach into the water; algae consume carbon dioxide overnight, which can push water more acidic; and low carbonate hardness (KH) leaves pond water more prone to pH swings in either direction. Regular water testing, removing decaying matter and maintaining a balanced ecosystem all help keep pH stable, with a product like pH Up Powder used to correct low readings when needed.
