Aqua One ReefSim DC Wavemaker Pump

Still water is unnatural water. In the wild, fish and aquatic plants live in environments shaped by constant flow, whether that’s the gentle sway of a planted river, the surge of a fast-moving stream, or the rhythmic push and pull of ocean currents. The Aqua One ReefSim DC Wavemaker Pump brings that natural movement into your aquarium, creating varied, programmable water flow patterns that benefit your fish, your plants and your filtration all at once.

Why Wavemakers are Essential for Marine & Reef Aquariums

In a reef aquarium, water movement isn’t optional; it’s critical. Here’s why the ReefSim is such a valuable tool for marine setups:

  • Coral health: corals are sessile animals that rely entirely on water movement to deliver food, oxygen and nutrients to their polyps. Without adequate flow, corals will bleach, starve and die. Different coral species require different flow intensities, and the ReefSim’s programmable patterns allow you to dial in the right movement for your specific coral mix.
  • Prevents dead spots: stagnant areas in a reef tank quickly accumulate detritus and become breeding grounds for harmful bacteria and algae. Varied, multidirectional flow from a wavemaker eliminates these dead spots entirely.
  • Mimics natural reef conditions: natural reef environments experience constant surge, swell and tidal flow. The ReefSim’s wave simulation modes replicate this far more effectively than a standard powerhead running at a fixed output.
  • Improved protein skimmer performance: good water circulation throughout the tank improves the efficiency of protein skimmers and other filtration equipment by ensuring waste-laden water is continually being drawn toward the intake.
  • Fish behaviour: marine fish from reef and open-water environments are active, strong swimmers that thrive with the exercise and stimulation that natural flow provides.

Great for Freshwater Tanks Too!

Wavemakers aren’t just for reef tanks. They’re a fantastic addition to a wide range of freshwater aquariums:

  • Planted aquariums: gentle, varied flow keeps CO2 and nutrients moving through the water column, reaching plant leaves more efficiently and preventing dead spots where algae tend to take hold.
  • African cichlid tanks: cichlids from Lakes Tanganyika and Malawi come from environments with strong, consistent wave action. A wavemaker replicates this beautifully and keeps these active fish stimulated.
  • Large community tanks: improve oxygenation and water circulation throughout the tank, reducing localised ammonia build-up and supporting your biological filtration.
  • Hillstream loaches and fast-water species: species from fast-moving streams and rivers thrive with higher flow rates. A wavemaker can create the current they need to behave naturally and stay healthy.

Key Features

Natural Flow Simulation Replicates natural waterways and varying currents, giving fish, corals and plants a more natural, stimulating environment.
Magnetic Mounting Magnetic bracket and base secures firmly to aquarium glass — no suction cups, no drilling. Suitable for glass up to 12mm thick.
Adjustable Head Articulating head directs flow in multiple directions, allowing precise positioning of the current within your aquarium.
Wireless External Controller Included with the pump. Adjust flow rate, mode and wavelength without disturbing the tank. Synchronise up to 9 pumps simultaneously for large or complex setups.
Wide Range of Flow Patterns Multiple programmable flow patterns suitable for almost any aquarium: from gentle ripples to strong alternating surge.
DC 24V Motor Energy-efficient DC motor with variable flow rate — quiet, powerful and easy on your electricity bill.

Which Model Should I Choose?

ReefSim 4000: Ideal for tanks up to around 200–300 litres where moderate, controllable flow is the goal.

ReefSim 8000: Suits larger tanks of 300 litres and above, or any tank where strong, high-volume flow is required such as SPS coral systems or large cichlid setups.

Both models can be synchronised with up to 9 units via the wireless controller for multi-pump setups in larger aquariums.
