Stray voltage in aquarium water is more common than most fishkeepers realise and is incredibly dangerous. Do I really need a grounding probe?

In all our years in the hobby and industry, electrical issues in aquariums are genuinely rare, the vast majority of fishkeepers will never experience one. That said, one of our team can personally attest that when it does happen, it’s quite the wake-up call (some might even call it a shock 😉 )! Since then, we’ve always recommended a grounding probe as a simple peace-of-mind addition to any tank. All aquarium electrical products are designed and tested for safe use in the hobby. How It Works

The Aqua One Grounding Probe works in two important ways:

Stray Voltage Dissipation	The probe sits submerged in your aquarium water and continuously dissipates the electromagnetic energy emitted by pumps, heaters and lights, preventing it from building up to harmful levels. This protects your fish from the chronic stress that stray voltage causes even at low levels.
Fault Current Protection	When connected to a power outlet fitted with a safety switch (GFCI or RCD), the grounding probe will immediately trip the circuit if dangerous leaking current from a faulty or damaged submersed electrical device enters the water, cutting the power before it can cause harm to fish or humans.

Do I Need a Grounding Probe?

A grounding probe is recommended for any aquarium running multiple electrical devices simultaneously. It is particularly important in the following situations:

Tanks running older or heavily used heaters: heating elements degrade over time and are a common source of leaking current
Aquariums with multiple pumps, powerheads or wave makers running at the same time
Tanks where fish are showing signs of stress with no obvious water quality cause: stray voltage is a commonly overlooked culprit
Any aquarium in a household with children who may place their hands in the tank
Reef and marine aquariums: saltwater conducts electricity far more efficiently than freshwater, making stray voltage a greater risk
