Neon Tetra

Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi)

NEON TETRA – SCHOOLING TROPICAL COMMUNITY FISH

Minimum volume requirement:  at least 40L for a school of 6 but bigger is always better! A larger tank allows you to house them with other species and will encourage their natural schooling behaviour.

Size: 3 – 4cm

pH: 6.2 – 6.8

Temperature: 21°C – 27°C

Life span: 3-5 years

Description

The neon tetra is a small fish, typically around 25mm in length. They have a sleek, slender body with a striking coloration. bright blue along the body with a vivid red stripe running from the middle of the body to the tail. The dorsal fin is positioned toward the back of the body.

Distribution

Neon Tetras are native to the Amazon Basin of South America. Including the water ways of Bazil, Colombia and Peru. The streams they live in are warm and acidic, often dense with vegetation and fallen branches that they school within, often in groups numbering into the thousands.

Diet

An omnivorous species, in the wild neon tetras will consume a wide variety of small aquatic insects, larvae, algae and other tiny aquatic organisms they find.  In captivity, their diet can be supplemented with a high quality tropical food for small species such as Hikari Micro Pellets, tropical flakes or brine shrimp.
